Privacy at Folia

Your family's data
belongs to your family.

We built Folia to hold some of the most personal information in your life. Here's exactly what we do with it — and what we never do.

🔒
Never sold
Your data is never sold to advertisers or third parties. Ever.
👁
Only you
Only your account can directly access your household data.
🗑
Delete anytime
Request deletion and your personal information is gone within 30 days.
🧒
Children's privacy
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.
Who can see my family's information?
Only your account can directly access your household data. Your information is protected by row-level security — a technical safeguard that prevents even Folia staff from querying your family's profile. The service providers we use to operate Folia may receive limited information to do their specific jobs (like processing payments or generating your brief), but are not permitted to use it for any other purpose.
Do you sell our data?
No. Folia does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We may disclose information to service providers that help us operate the service. These providers are permitted to use personal information only as needed to provide services to Folia, or as otherwise permitted by law.
Do you collect sensitive information?
You may choose to provide information in forms, generated briefs, PDFs, or optional notes. Please do not include sensitive personal information in optional notes or free-text fields unless it is necessary for your use of the service. We do not ask for health information or other highly sensitive information unless it is needed for a specific feature you choose to use, and we use reasonable safeguards to protect information you submit.
How do AI-powered features use my information?
If you use Folia's AI-powered features, we may send the content you submit and related instructions to Anthropic to generate drafts, summaries, or other outputs for you. Under Anthropic's current API terms, Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs from API services to train its AI models by default. Folia does not independently use your submitted content to train any AI model. Because Anthropic's terms are subject to change, we encourage you to review Anthropic's privacy practices at anthropic.com if you have questions.
Do you use analytics or tracking?
Folia uses Google Analytics to understand how users interact with the service (for example, which features are used and how often). Google Analytics collects information such as pages visited, time spent on pages, and general geographic region. We have disabled Google's advertising features, meaning your information is not used for ad targeting or cross-site tracking through this tool. You can learn more about how Google uses data at google.com/policies/privacy/partners.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. You can request deletion of your account or your personal information at any time by emailing privacy@withfolia.com. We will verify your identity before processing your request and will delete or de-identify your personal information within thirty (30) days. We may keep limited information where required by law, including for payments, tax, fraud prevention, security, and legal compliance.
Is Folia intended for children?
No. Folia is intended for a general adult audience. You must be at least 18 years old to create a Folia account. Folia is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, please contact us so we can investigate and delete the information as appropriate.
Will you send me marketing emails?
Only if you opt in. If you check the opt-in box at Step 1 of the brief generator, we will send you a welcome email and occasional tips or updates about Folia. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email we send. We will not send you marketing emails if you do not opt in, and opting out does not affect your ability to use the service.
What if there's a data breach?
We protect your information using encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS), encryption at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews. No system is completely secure. If a breach affects your personal information and requires notice, we will notify you as required by law.
How We Protect Your Data
🔐
Encryption everywhere
All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest to protect the information you submit through Folia.
🛡
Access controls
Row-level security at the database level ensures only your account can access your data — not other users, not Folia staff.
⚕️
Optional notes are your choice
You decide what goes in any free-text field. We strongly recommend against entering health details, financial information, or security credentials in optional notes.
💳
Stripe handles payments
Payment processing is handled by Stripe. Folia does not store full payment card numbers on its own servers.
Our commitments to you
These commitments are backed by our full Privacy Policy below.
Your Responsibility
Review every brief before you share it.
Folia generates briefs based only on the information you enter. You are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and currency of all information you enter. Before sharing any generated brief with a caregiver, you must verify that all information has been correctly assigned to the intended household member. You are solely responsible for reviewing each generated brief in its entirety before providing it to any caregiver. No caregiver should act on any brief without you first verbally confirming all critical details, including pick-up and drop-off locations, emergency contacts, and any care instructions.
Children's Privacy
We take children's privacy seriously.
Folia is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. When entering information about minor household members, we strongly recommend: entering only the minimum information necessary; avoiding sensitive identifying details about minors in free-text fields; reviewing each generated brief before sharing; and sharing generated briefs only directly and privately with the specific authorized caregiver — never in a public or group channel. Please review our full Privacy Policy below for further guidance.
Privacy questions?
We respond to every privacy question personally — not with an auto-reply.
Usually within one business day.

1. Who We Are

Folia is a brief generator and caregiver information service operated by AJS Family, LLC, a California limited liability company doing business as Folia ("Folia," "we," "us," or "our"). Our website is withfolia.com. You can reach us with privacy questions at privacy@withfolia.com.

2. Scope of This Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Folia collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information when you visit our website, use the Folia brief generator, or create a Folia account. It also describes your rights with respect to your personal information.

By using Folia, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Folia.

This Privacy Policy is incorporated into and forms part of Folia's Terms of Service, available at withfolia.com/terms.

3. What Folia Does

Folia is a brief generator that allows users to enter household and caregiver information and generate informational briefs and PDFs for personal, non-commercial household use. Folia is not a medical records system, a healthcare provider, or a substitute for professional medical, legal, financial, or other advice of any kind.

4. Information We Collect

a. Information You Provide Directly

When you use Folia, you may provide:

  • Account information: Your name, email address, and password when you create an account.
  • Brief and form content: Household information, schedules, caregiver instructions, contact details, and other content you enter to generate briefs or PDFs.
  • Optional notes: If you use optional free-text or notes fields, you decide what information to include. Folia strongly recommends against entering sensitive personal information in free-text fields, including health or medical details, financial account information, or government identification numbers. Folia also includes dedicated optional fields for home network and security credential information (such as wifi network name and password and home security or access codes); entry of information in those fields is entirely voluntary, and we strongly recommend entering security credentials only when strictly necessary for the specific caregiving engagement described in the brief. If you choose to include sensitive information in any field, you do so entirely at your own risk and discretion, and you are solely responsible for its accuracy, completeness, and currency.
  • Payment information: If you subscribe to a paid plan, you provide payment information to Stripe, our payment processor. Folia does not store full payment card numbers on its own servers. We may receive limited transaction information from Stripe, such as payment status, billing name, and the last four digits of a card, for billing, records, and support purposes.
  • Communications: If you contact us by email or otherwise, we collect the content of those communications.

b. Information Collected Automatically

When you visit our website or use the service, we and our service providers may automatically collect:

  • Usage data: Pages visited, features used, brief completions, and similar activity data.
  • Device and browser data: Browser type, operating system, IP address, and referring URLs.
  • Analytics data: We use Google Analytics to collect aggregated traffic and usage data. Google's advertising features and data-sharing settings are disabled. We do not send personally identifiable information to Google Analytics.

c. Information We Do Not Solicit

Folia does not solicit, prompt for, or maintain dedicated fields for health information, medical data, financial account numbers, or government identification numbers. Folia is not a medical records system and does not treat any information you enter as medical data. Folia does include dedicated fields for home network and security credential information, including wifi network name and password and home security or access codes, because this information is often necessary for caregiving engagements. Entry of this information is entirely optional. We strongly recommend that you enter security credentials only when strictly necessary for the specific caregiving engagement described in the brief. If you choose to include such information, you do so at your own risk and are solely responsible for any consequences, including unauthorized access to your home network or property. If you use optional free-text or notes fields to enter other sensitive information, you do so entirely at your own risk. Our Terms of Service disclaim liability for information you choose to enter voluntarily, and you are solely responsible for ensuring that any information you enter and share with caregivers is accurate, complete, and up to date.

d. Do Not Track

California's Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) requires us to disclose how we respond to web browser "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals. At this time, there is no universally accepted standard for responding to DNT signals, and Folia does not currently alter its data collection or use practices in response to DNT signals from your browser. We do not authorize third parties to collect personal information about individual users' online activities over time and across third-party websites through our service. If our practices change, we will update this Privacy Policy accordingly.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Folia service, including generating briefs and PDFs
  • Process payments and manage subscriptions
  • Send transactional emails, such as payment confirmations, subscription notices, and password resets
  • Add your email address to our marketing mailing list if you affirmatively opt in by checking the box labeled "Send me tips and updates from Folia" at Step 1 of the brief generator flow. This checkbox is unchecked by default. Only users who check this box will be added to the marketing list. You may unsubscribe at any time.
  • Respond to your questions, requests, and communications
  • Monitor and improve the security, reliability, and performance of the service
  • Comply with applicable law, respond to legal process, and enforce our Terms of Service
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud and abuse

We do not use your personal information to serve you targeted advertising or to build advertising profiles about you.

6. How We Disclose Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We may disclose your personal information to the following categories of third parties:

a. Service Providers

We work with the following service providers that process personal information on our behalf to help us operate the service. These providers are permitted to use your personal information only as needed to deliver services to Folia or as otherwise required by law.

ProviderPurpose
SupabaseDatabase hosting and backend infrastructure
StripePayment processing and subscription management
AnthropicAI-powered brief generation
KlaviyoTransactional and marketing email communications
Google AnalyticsAggregated website and service analytics

b. Legal and Safety Disclosures

We may disclose your personal information if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to: (i) comply with applicable law or legal process, including a valid subpoena, court order, or government request; (ii) enforce our Terms of Service; (iii) protect the rights, property, or safety of Folia, our users, or others; or (iv) detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues.

c. Business Transfers

If Folia is involved in a merger, acquisition, asset sale, or similar transaction, your personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you by email or prominent notice on our website before your personal information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

d. With Your Consent

We may share your personal information for other purposes with your explicit consent.

7. AI-Powered Features

If you use Folia's brief generator or other AI-powered features, the content you submit may be transmitted, together with related processing instructions, to Anthropic, our AI service provider, solely to generate your requested brief, summary, or other output. Anthropic provides this service under its commercial API terms. Under Anthropic's current API terms, Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs from API services to train its AI models by default. Folia does not independently use your submitted content to train any AI model. Because Anthropic's terms are subject to change, we encourage you to review Anthropic's privacy practices at anthropic.com if you have questions about how your content is handled at the API level.

8. Children's Privacy

Folia is intended for adults and is not directed to children. You must be at least 18 years old to create a Folia account. Children under 13 may not create accounts. All information about minor household members is entered and controlled exclusively by adult account holders. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13, and we do not market to children. Our practices are designed to be consistent with the principles of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Information About Minor Household Members. Because Folia's brief generator may be used to document schedules, pick-up and drop-off locations, emergency contacts, and caregiving instructions for minor children, account holders should exercise particular care when entering information about minors. We strongly recommend: (i) entering only the minimum information necessary to generate a useful and accurate brief; (ii) avoiding entry of specific home addresses, school names or addresses, health or medical information, or other sensitive identifying details about minors in any free-text or notes fields; (iii) reviewing each generated brief in its entirety before sharing it with any caregiver to confirm it does not contain sensitive identifying information about a minor beyond what is necessary for the specific caregiving engagement; and (iv) sharing generated briefs only directly and privately with the specific authorized caregiver for the engagement described in that brief, and never distributing or posting a brief containing information about a minor in any public, group, or uncontrolled channel. Information about minor children in caregiving briefs — including location, schedule, and emergency contact data — is sensitive. You are solely responsible for controlling to whom you provide any brief that contains information about a minor household member.

If you believe that a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, please contact us at privacy@withfolia.com. If we learn that we have collected personal information directly from a child under 13 without appropriate authorization, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. Folia does not independently review, moderate, or restrict the type or volume of information entered about minor household members and cannot prevent account holders from entering sensitive information about minors. You are solely responsible for ensuring that any information you enter about a minor is limited to what is necessary for the intended caregiving purpose, is accurate and current, and is shared only with individuals you have specifically authorized to provide care.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to provide the service, fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, and comply with our legal obligations. When you request deletion of your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information within thirty (30) days, subject to information we are required or permitted to retain for legal, security, fraud-prevention, tax, accounting, billing, dispute resolution, or compliance purposes. For requests submitted pursuant to your rights under Section 12, we will provide a formal response within forty-five (45) days of receipt, consistent with the CCPA/CPRA.

10. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit (such as TLS/HTTPS), encryption at rest, and access controls designed to limit access to authorized personnel and service providers. We also implement row-level security at the database level, a technical control that ensures only your account can access your family's data — Folia staff and other users cannot query your household information. No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information.

If we determine that a security breach affecting your personal information requires notification, we will notify you as required by applicable law, including as required by California Civil Code § 1798.82, which requires notification in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay.

11. User Responsibility for Accuracy

Folia is a tool that generates informational briefs based solely on the information you provide. You are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and currency of all information you enter into Folia. Folia does not verify, validate, or independently confirm any information you submit. Briefs generated by Folia reflect only the information you have entered at the time of generation and may not reflect subsequent changes to household circumstances, caregiver instructions, health status, or other relevant information. Each generated brief includes the date and time of generation; it is your responsibility to provide caregivers with the most recently generated brief and to update your information before each caregiving engagement.

Data Accuracy and Profile Integrity. Where Folia provides individual household member profiles or similar features, it is your sole responsibility to verify, before sharing any generated brief with any caregiver, that all information in that brief has been correctly assigned to the intended household member. Folia does not guarantee that data entered for one household member will not be displayed, attributed, or associated with another household member as a result of user error, software error, or any other cause. YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWING EACH GENERATED BRIEF IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE PROVIDING IT TO ANY CAREGIVER TO CONFIRM THAT ALL INFORMATION IS ACCURATELY ASSIGNED TO THE CORRECT INDIVIDUAL. No caregiver should act on any brief without the account holder first verbally confirming all critical details, including but not limited to pick-up and drop-off locations, emergency contacts, and any care instructions.

Folia expressly disclaims all liability for any harm, loss, or damage arising from: (i) inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated information entered by you; (ii) a caregiver's reliance on a brief that has not been updated to reflect current information; (iii) any discrepancy between information contained in a generated brief and actual household conditions; (iv) any mis-assignment, co-mingling, or incorrect attribution of data between household member profiles, whether caused by user error, software error, or any other cause; (v) any error, omission, or distortion in AI-generated output that does not accurately reflect the information you submitted; (vi) a caregiver's failure to independently verify information directly with you before providing care; or (vii) any brief shared with or accessed by an unintended third party as a result of your actions. You should review and update your briefs regularly and instruct any caregiver to verify all details directly with you before providing care.

12. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights with respect to your personal information. Although Folia may not currently meet the revenue or data volume thresholds that trigger mandatory CCPA/CPRA compliance obligations, we voluntarily extend the following privacy rights to California residents, consistent with the principles of the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA). Folia's voluntary extension of these rights does not constitute an admission that Folia meets the applicable statutory thresholds for mandatory CCPA/CPRA compliance, and nothing in this section shall be construed as such.

  • Right to Know: You may request that we disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the categories of sources, the business or commercial purposes for collection, and the categories of third parties with whom we share your information.
  • Right to Delete: You may request that we delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
  • Right to Correct: You may request that we correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
  • Right to Opt Out of Sale/Sharing: We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If this changes, we will update this policy and provide an opt-out mechanism.
  • Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information: We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes beyond those permitted by the CCPA/CPRA.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights.

To submit a privacy request, email us at privacy@withfolia.com. We will verify your identity before processing your request and will respond within forty-five (45) days of receipt, consistent with the CCPA/CPRA. If we require additional time, we will notify you of the extension and the reason within the initial 45-day period. California residents may also designate an authorized agent to submit requests on their behalf, provided we can verify the agent's authority. Actual deletion or de-identification of your personal information will occur within thirty (30) days of identity verification, consistent with our data retention practices described in Section 9.

California's Shine the Light Law. Under California Civil Code § 1798.83, California residents may request, once per calendar year, information about any personal information Folia has disclosed to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes during the prior calendar year. Folia does not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes. All third-party service providers listed in Section 6 of this Privacy Policy are contractually restricted to processing your personal information only as necessary to provide services to Folia, and not for their own marketing or commercial purposes. If our practices change, we will update this Privacy Policy and provide a mechanism for California residents to submit Shine the Light requests by contacting us at privacy@withfolia.com.

13. Email Communications

When you use the Folia brief generator, you will be presented at Step 1 with an optional, unchecked checkbox with the label: "Send me tips and updates from Folia." By affirmatively checking that box, you consent to the addition of your email address to our marketing mailing list. This checkbox is unchecked by default; you will not be added to our marketing mailing list unless you check it. You may unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us at privacy@withfolia.com. You cannot opt out of transactional emails (such as payment confirmations and password resets) while you have an active account.

14. Links to Other Websites

Our website or briefs may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties and encourage you to review their privacy policies.

15. Dispute Resolution; Governing Law; Arbitration; Class Action Waiver

Governing Law. This Privacy Policy and any disputes arising out of or related to it or Folia's privacy practices are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

Informal Resolution. Before initiating any formal proceeding, you agree to contact us at privacy@withfolia.com with a written description of the dispute and the relief sought. The parties agree to make a good-faith effort to resolve the dispute informally for at least thirty (30) days before initiating arbitration or any other formal proceeding.

Arbitration; Incorporation by Reference. Any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to this Privacy Policy or Folia's privacy practices that cannot be resolved through the informal process above is subject to binding individual arbitration. The full arbitration agreement — including the applicable JAMS rules and claimed-value thresholds, fee allocation, small claims carve-out, mass arbitration and batching procedures, opt-out right, court jurisdiction fallback, and severability — is set forth in Section 16 (Governing Law; Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Agreement) of Folia's Terms of Service, available at withfolia.com/terms, which is incorporated into this Privacy Policy by this reference in its entirety. The Federal Arbitration Act (9 U.S.C. § 1 et seq.) governs the interpretation and enforcement of the arbitration agreement. California substantive law governs the merits of any dispute.

CLASS ACTION WAIVER — TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, YOU AND FOLIA AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS, COLLECTIVE, CONSOLIDATED, OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION OR PROCEEDING. This waiver applies to all claims, whether in arbitration, in court, or otherwise. If an arbitrator or court finds this waiver unenforceable as to a particular claim, that claim shall be severed and the remainder of this Section 15 shall continue in full force.

Severability. If any portion of this Section 15 is found unenforceable, that portion shall be severed and the remaining provisions shall be enforced to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.

16. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by posting a notice on our website at least 14 days before the changes take effect. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy reflects the most recent revision. Your continued use of Folia after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
